The year was 1997 and SWV dropped the infectious single, 'Can We' (featuring Missy and produced by Timbaland) from the 'Booty Call' soundtrack. RCA Records saw the success of that single and quickly got SWV in the studio to put out Release Some Tension within a few months. And after listening to this album, it shows that it only took a few months. Instead of enjoying the success of 'Can We' or the acclaim they got for their New Beginning album they released a year earlier, they gave us this album full of guest rappers and tracks sampled from yesteryear's Top Ten Hits.
This album should have been called Rap All-Stars featuring SWV because the ladies appear to be guests on their own album. This example is illustrated best on the song featuring Snoop Dogg that rides a tune similar to The D.O.C.'s 'It's Funky Enough', predictably titled, 'Gettin' Funky'. Snoop raps all 3 verses while the ladies sing the chorus. You'll also find Lil' Cease rapping on 'Love Like This', which rides the same 'Rain Dance' sample by Jeff Lorber that he and Lil' Kim used on the 'Crush on You' remix. No, Kim isn't on that song; she's instead on 'Give It Up' ripping the mic while Taj sings lead. And with the exception of Redman on 'Lose My Cool', the other rappers give lackluster performances (see Foxy Brown on the title track).

Release Some Tension Swv Lyrics
The good songs on here will make any fan proud. 'Lose Myself', 'Here For You', and 'Rain' are great slow jams (which is what SWV is known for) and, of course, 'Can We' is on here. But these tunes aren't enough to save this album from mediocrity. In the end, the only way you'll release some tension is by throwing this CD out your car window.
